Westland Convalescent & Rehab Center was established in 1969 by real estate developer and acclaimed
artist David Shubow (1913 - 1998). At a time when this country was just
beginning to learn about long term care, he helped to pioneer the long term care
market by building the original one hundred and ten bed Center in a location that was
filled with trees and wildlife. Over time the Westland, Michigan area grew and became more
populated, thus providing the impetus to add an additional one hundred and twenty beds
in 1973. Westland Convalescent & Rehab Center has been privately owned and operated since 1969.
We have endeavored to create a sense of belonging for the residents and staff. As a result of this cohesiveness, many of the staff members have often cared for their own family members as residents. Much of our staff is made up of immediate family members, with brothers, sisters, aunts and uncles working side by side.
David Shubow believed in taking risks on people. He knew and understood that human beings make an organization. His strength and vision, (supported by the Board of Directors and led by Judith G. Caroselli, Administrator since 1972) has resulted in Westland Convalescent & Rehab Center receiving numerous awards for excellence in providing health care to more than five thousand recipients over the last 31 years.
Westland Convalescent & Rehab Center has also been honored with the "Facility of the Year Award" by the Health Care Association of Michigan, and continues to deliver state of the art and cutting edge, exemplary health care. The Public Relations Award of 1996 was bestowed opon the Center for outstanding service to the community.
Many of the loyal staff of the Westland Convalescent & Rehab Center have been recipients of individual Awards for Excellence from universities and professional organizations.
Westland Convalescent & Rehab Center has always been truly blessed by the many splendid people who make up the devoted staff. More than twenty percent of the current staff has been employed 10 years or longer. Countless individuals have taken advantage of scholarship programs, provided by the owners of the Center, to pursue degrees of higher learning in areas as diverse as nursing, medical records, master gardening and food service.
Today Westland Convalescent & Rehab Center is facing the 21st century poised to master the challenges of dynamics in health care while launching other programs to enrich the life of each resident by bringing the world into the Center through technology, *edenization
and art enrichment.
